Info for Competitors
The day will consist of 2 main competitions:
- A Beginners competition sponsored by Tootega and Cullercoats Bike and Kayak
- An Open Surf Kayak Competition
Tootega are also going to run a separate Best Wave competition which will be open to those entering one of the two competitions, more details to follow.
We’re running a 12 week intro to surf course to develop Surf Kayaking in the North East in the lead up to the competition. The beginners competition is geared towards those new to the sport and just developing. There’s no restriction on the boats used and there’ll be 12 Tootega sit on tops to use at the event if you want to use one.
We’ll run this as three heats of 6, depending on your position in your heat:
Positions 1 and 2 in each heat will progress to the main final
Positions 3 and 4 in each heat will progress to the shield final
Positions 5 and 6 in each heat will progress to the plate final
The open competition will be open to all. As this is our first competition we’re keeping it simple and running all classes together (HP/IC/Men/Ladies/Junior)
We’re capping the entry at 20 and will run this as six heats of 5. Every competitor will then progress through to a semi final, with the top paddler from each semi final going through to the Final. Depending on the entry we may run a separate final for different classes should the numbers prevail.

What is Surf Kayaking?
Surf kayaking is the sport, technique, and equipment, used in surfing ocean waves with kayaks. Surf kayaking has many similarities to surf board surfing, but with boats designed for use in surf zones, and with a paddle. A number of kayak designs are used, but all are aimed at better using the waves to propel the craft.
Where is the competition happening?
We’re on Longsands Beach from 9am-5pm on Saturday 16th September. We’ll be at the south end, near Crusoes Cafe and the lifeguard base. Look out for the red marquee, this is where you’ll find information about the day.
Do spectators have to pay or register?
Nope, just turn up. There is lots happening on the day you can get involved with. Watch the competition, meet the surfers, meet the sponsors and even give it a go with local surf kayak school Cullercoats Bike & Kayak.
How do I register to compete?
